Assent means to agree with a thing. Epictetus is quoted as saying, “It is better by
assenting to truth to conquer opinion, than by assenting to opinion to be conquered by truth.”
When you are presented with information or “an impression” you must make a
judgement about it. There are only three options when assenting to “an impression”
– the first is that it is a correct impression and aligns with nature, second that it is
wrong and against nature, or third that not enough information is available to make
a judgement. When you incorrectly judge something, you cannot correctly
understand your desires from right and wrong, nor can you choose good and bad actions!
